Kutiman is an Israeli musician who has harnessed the full power and promise of Web 2.0 to create some amazing music. According to his site, he trolled through tons of YouTube videos finding snippets of performances to combine into original pieces of music. For me it brings to mind the sample-laden Paul’s Boutique album by the Beastie Boys. What’s interesting is how the changing landscape of copyright/intellectual property law, not to mention royalty payments, following the release of that album made it cost prohibitive for anyone to make something like that ever again. Has the Internet broken down that kind of barrier? At least not for the time being, and thank goodness–this is really something special. I particularly love the title track and “I’m New.”
